Maine Coon

The Main Coon is the largest domestic cat! It has a very unique physical appearance. This is one of the oldest breeds of cats. The Maine Coon is the official state cat of Maine. Their origin is unknown, but there are several theories. This breed of cats was very popular in the 19th century, but after introducing a long-haired cats in the 20th century Maine Coon were threatened. Today, they are the most popular cat breed in the world! The Maine Coon has a unique body shape and a long coat. Their tail is much longer and bigger than on the other cats. People like having them as their pets, because they are very gentle and intelligent, more than ordinary domestic cats! Scientists found several health problems. Hip dysplasia and feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy are the most common, but screening methods can solve frequency of these diseases!

One of the theories of origin, involves Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France! She was executed in 1973, but before that, she wanted to escape from France, in the US. A Captain Samuel Clough, should transport her into the US. When they loaded the ship with Antoinette’s possession, including six Turkish Angora cats, the queen was caught and executed. Although, she didn’t make it to the US, her cats did, where they breed with other short hair cats, what eventually was a reason for the appearance of the Maine Coon.
Another theory is related to the Captain Charles Coon. He kept a long haired cats on his hip, so every time when he come into New England’s port, these cats would mate with local cat population. Eventually a long haired kittens began appearing in the mentioned port. They were named as ‘’Coon’s cats’’.
